Criminal Defense and Areas of Practice Overview
Our firm has had many years of experience representing those who have been charged with numerous criminal offenses in both State and Federal Courts across the Southeast. Some of the areas of expertise include the following:
White Collar Crimes: We defend people who have been charged with, or are anticipating being with offenses commonly referred to as “white collar crimes.” As is evident from reading the newspaper or listening to the local news, Federal prosecutors actively prosecute these type offenses. Because these crimes typically deal with financial matters and do not involve physical violence, they are called “white collar” crimes. These type offenses can often be complex and require experienced representation. Such offenses include:
- bank fraud
- embezzlement
- conspiracy
- credit card fraud
- money laundering
- securities and tax prosecutions
- public corruption
Narcotics and controlled substances offenses: Our firm handles drug cases in both State and Federal courts ranging from simple possession of controlled substances to manufacturing and distribution of drugs including marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, etc. Depending on the seriousness of the charges, penalties for drug offenses can be extremely severe, especially if other factors such as prior convictions or gun possession come into play.
Child pornography and internet crimes: More and more prosecutions are being brought, especially in Federal Court, for offenses involving internet crimes that include possession of child pornography, credit card fraud, identity theft, and internet pharmaceutical schemes. Additionally, because of a number of Acts passed by Congress, the penalties in these cases are severe. These issues dealing with computers and the internet can be very complex, and require the experienced representation that our firm can offer.
Sex crimes: Those charged with offenses commonly known as “sex crimes,” face not only serious criminal penalties, but also, if convicted, they would be subjected to registering as a sexual offender for life. Depending on the offense, the penalties can range from probation, fines and community service, to significant jail time. Federal prosecutions from offenses involving child pornography are rising, and the penalties are often severe. “Sex crimes” include:
- rape
- sodomy
- sexual assault
- child pornography
- indecent exposure
- solicitation of a minor
Crimes of Violence include offenses such as Murder, Assault, Robbery, and Sexual Assault. Without question, these are serious offenses, and punishments can be severe, thus a vigorous representation is necessary.
Federal firearms offenses: Our firm often represents those charged criminally in federal and state courts with firearms offenses. Because some of these offenses can carry minimum mandatory sentences, a vigorous defense is required. We also handle the representation of those charged with FFL cases, administrative or regulatory violations.
DUI: We routinely defend people arrested and charged with driving under the influence (DUI) of both alcohol and drugs. The ramifications of a DUI conviction are wide ranging from not only the loss of your license, but also to a possible felony conviction, and the loss of your job if a conviction would lead to you being fired, or if driving is an intricate part of your employment.
Appeals: Our firm provides representation to those who have had a negative or less than satisfactory outcome after a criminal conviction. An appeal is an avenue to request that a higher court give you some type of relief. Courts such as the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court consider criminal appeals.
Domestic Relations: Representation in Domestic Relations Court includes:
- Contested and uncontested divorces
- Child Custody and Child Support issues
- Petitions to Modify
- Petitions for Rule Nisi
Personal injury and wrongful death – civil actions: If you, a family member or friend have been injured in accident involving an automobile, truck , motorcycle, or other vehicle, or if you have sustained any other type of personal injury for which you feel you should be compensated, we can provide representation for you. Wrongful death is a term referring to situations where a person is killed as a result of negligence, or the misconduct and/or intentional acts of another, whether an individual or company or corporation.
